/ Matte Painting
Almost immediately after graduating from art school, I had the extreme good fortune to land a job in the Walt Disney Studios Matte Painting Dept. I was doubly fortunate that when I entered the industry, matte paintings were still being done the old-fashioned way: with real paint…on glass! Yes, old school matte painting is as difficult as it looks...which is why it was cool. For me, when everything went digital, the challenge evaporated...so I moved on. I did do several digital matte paintings before I left the matte biz. However all of the paintings represented here are traditional - real paint, on glass, composited in-camera, on film.
OK, that’s not entirely true; two of the paintings (the Santa Clause North Pole ice painting, and the Alien 3 gantry painting) are painted on masonite. By the way, I painted all but the Alien 3 painting with acrylics. The Alien 3 painting is oil.
