Surf's Up at Sony Pictures Animation was the first film I worked on as the production designer - the person responsible for the look and design of an entire film. I would be lying if I said I wasn't scared to death when I got the job! An animated feature film is an EXTREMELY expensive venture, so you can imagine the pressure you feel when you’re responsible for a big chunk of it. Especially when it’s your first time! My advice for those in a similar situation: surround yourself with great people; protect them, encourage them, and get out of their way! Don't try to do everything yourself; that's why you have a team. Oh...and check your ego at the door.
